Determiners to indicate
Определители для указания
We can use question words to connect two and more sentences in one. In this case, they point at objects and people and determine them. You know the question words very well:
Мы можем использовать вопросительные слова, чтобы связать два и больше предложений в одно. В этом случае они указывают на предметы и людей и определяют их. Вопросительные слова ты прекрасно знаешь:
- How (Как): Tell me how I can help you.
- What (Что): What you’re saying is interesting (It’s interesting what you’re saying).
- When (Когда): We don’t know when it happened.
- Which (Который): The book which is on your table is mine
- Who (Кто): The man who is living next to me is a runner.
- Whose (Чей): This is the book whose title I couldn’t remember. The girl whose cat comes to our garden is my classmate.
- Why (Почему): My mum always knows why I’m sad.
Remember a general rule: “who” indicates people, “which” – objects and animals. At the same time, “whose” points at both of them (see the example above).
Запомни общее правило: “who” указывает на людей, “which” – на предметы и животных. В то же время “whose” указывает на тех и других (см. пример выше).
How it works
Как это работает
Let’s see how we can make one sentence out of two or three different sentences. In parenthesis (), you see a determiner we need to use.
Давай посмотрим, как можно сделать одно предложение из двух или трёх разных предложений. В скобках указан определитель, который нам нужен.
1. This is a dog. It belongs to my neighbour Sasha. (which)
This is the dog which belongs to my neighbour Sasha. “Which” stands for “it” and defines the dog. Это собака, которая принадлежит моему соседу Саше.
2. You are saying an interesting thing. I like it. (what)
I like what you are saying. “What” stands for “it” and indicates what I like. Мне нравится то, что ты говоришь.
NB: Don’t confuse “what” with the connector “that“, which doesn’t indicate anything but connect sentences with each other: I know (that) you called me. Very often, you can omit “that” without losing the meaning.
ВАЖНО: Не путай определитель “what” (что) с союзом “that” (что), который не указывает, а просто связывает предложения между собой: Я знаю, (что) ты мне звонил. Его очень часто можно опустить, и предложение от этого не потеряет смысл.
3. This is the book. I couldn’t remember its title. (whose)
This is the book whose title I couldn’t remember. “Whose” refers to the book and its title. Это та книга, чьё название я забыл.
4. This is the man. He lives next to me. He’s a runner. (who)
The man who lives next to me is a runner. “Who” indicates which man is a runner. Мужчина, который живёт рядом со мной, бегун.
5. This is the cat. It is black. It loves my friend. My friend’s parents are working in Moscow. I love to visit Moscow in summer. (which, whose, where)
The cat, which is black, loves my friend, whose parents are working in Moscow, where I love to go in summer. Кот, который чёрный, любит моего друга, чьи родители работают в Москве, где я люблю бывать летом.
Okay, that’s really cool, isn’t it? Try to connect sentences yourself and feel like a true writer.
Ну, круто же? Попробуем потренироваться.
Let’s do it!
Practice 1
In the following exercise, match the right translation to each sentence.
В следующем упражнении подбери правильный перевод для каждого предложения.
Practice 2
Find the right determiner or connector and drag it to the right place.
Найди правильный определитель или союз и поставь его в нужное место.
Practice 3
Reorder the words into the correct sentence. Remember the order of the English sentence: a subject + a verb + an object + other members. When we have a compound sentence, we usually have two or more simple sentences in one, so we have two or more subjects and verbs. Tip: if you aren’t sure, put all pairs of subjects and verbs first, then all the other words around them.
Поставь слова в правильном порядке, чтобы получилось предложение. Помни, что в английском предложении довольно строгий порядок слов: подлежащее + сказуемое + дополнение + все остальные члены предложения. Сложное предложение состоит из двух и более простых предложений, поэтому всегда будет две и более основы (подлежащее + сказуемое). Совет: если сомневаешься, расставь сначала все пары подлежащих и сказуемых, а потом все остальные слова вокруг них.
Practice 4
Try to connect the sentences and feel like a real writer. Sometimes, you’ll need connectors from our previous lesson (and, but, because, etc.).
Попробуй соединить предложения сам и почувствовать себя настоящим писателем. Иногда тебе понадобятся союзы из нашего прошлого урока (and, but, because, etc.)
Hoorah! Fantastic! You are ready for the test!
