Sentence by sentence builds a story
Знаешь, как строят дом? Кирпичик к кирпичику, камешек к камешку, соломка к соломке. Ну смотря какой дом, конечно. Вот и мы будем строить истории: слово к слову, фраза к фразе. Предложение к предложению. За дело!
The order of words in a sentence
At first, you have to remember the order of the bricks. If you do it wrongly, your house story will fall apart, and nobody will understand it. So, in English, the bricks are put like this:
Для начала тебе нужно запомнить последовательность кирпичиков. Если неправильно это делать, твой дом история развалится, и никто ничего не поймёт. Так вот, в английском кирпичики складывают вот так:
Раз, два, три, четыре.
Раз = Кто (Что) / who (what).
Два = делает / do (does).
Три = что / what.
Четыре = как, когда, зачем, с кем / how, when, why (what for), who with (with whom).
An Octopus is laying bricks quickly.
(Who / кто?) An Octopus (what is he doing / что делает?) is laying (what / что?) bricks (how / как?) quickly.
Instead of an octopus, you can say that The table is in your room. Or: The book is on your table.
Вместо осьминога ты можешь взять стол и сказать, что он стоит у тебя в комнате. Или книгу, которая лежит на столе.
Words to questions
Okay, now let’s see what words answer the questions Who? What? How? When? Who… with (with whom)? Where? Why? Of course, I know that it’s such a trifling thing for you, but I just want to check. So. In the next exercise, match the words with the correct questions. There are 7 groups of words. Here they are:
Fruit & vegetables, an apple pie, buses, planes & cars, a table, mountains;
In a garden, somewhere, at home, nowhere, abroad, in your dreams;
Because of bad weather, because she wanted so, I don’t know, who knows;
With my friends, alone, on my own, by myself, with them;
People, boys & girls, parents, friends & classmates;
By train, quickly, by myself, with their help, on her own, very well;
After school, on time, at some moment, in spring, in the morning, at noon, at 5 pm
Теперь вот что. Давай посмотрим, какие слова отвечают на вопросы кто? что? как? когда? с кем? где? почему? Это, конечно, пустячное для тебя дело, но я хочу проверить. Итак. В следующем задании перетащи вопросы к подходящим словам в группах. Всего 7 групп. Вот они:
From word to phrase and sentence
Every word in a sentence can have its helpers – other words that go together with the main word and give it a special quality: a size, an age, a way of doing something (how we do something), time. These helpers have their own place around the main words. There are some general rules about this. Read the following sentences, pay attention to the bolded words: where they are placed and what they describe. Then, do the exercise and complete the rules.
У каждого слова в предложении могут быть помощники – другие слова, которые идут вместе с главным словом и описывают его качества: размер, возраст, то, как происходит действие, время действия. У помощников есть своё место вокруг главного слова. Есть несколько правил об этом. Прочитай предложения ниже, обращая внимание на выделенные слова: где они стоят и что описывают. А потом сделай упражнение и сформулируй правила.
- This is an express train, and this is an impatient tortoise. (What type of a train / tortoise?)
- Hornets usually (always, often, never, etc.) sit on flowers. (How often? Where?)
- Suddenly, a hare raced by. (How?)
- A fierce bird came swooping at a hare. (Where?/At whom?)
- The tortoise won’t (will not) clean his shell tomorrow. (When?)
- Hounds run very quickly. (How?)
- The tortoise is creeping slowly into a car. (Where?)
- A snake is sliding beneath a tree. (Where?)
- At 8 a.m., a horse will visit a hare. (When?)
- A fast hound, a timid hare, a racing horse, a fierce bird and an angry hornet scared the tortoise. (Who?/What?)
Do it!
Now, let’s see how well you can understand what the words in bold from the previous exercise show. In the gaps, you have to put the right numbers of the sentences which correspond the questions. There might be more than one option. TIP: the questions at the end of each sentence will help you.
Ну что, давай посмотрим, как ты разобрался в том, что показывают выделенные слова в предыдущем упражнении. Вставь в пропуски номер предложения, которое соответствует вопросу. Может быть больше, чем один вариант. ПОДСКАЗКА: вопросы в конце каждого предложения помогут тебе.
Complete the rules
Now, you’ll finish the rules about the place of helpers around their main words. Read the sentence, pay attention to the words in italics and then choose between the options in bold clicking on it. To understand everything better, remember about the names of certain parts of speech:
- a noun – a hound, a horse;
- an adjective – fierce, tired;
- an adverb of frequency – often, always, never, etc.;
- an adverb of how we do something – quickly, slowly, smartly;
- an adverb or adverbial phrase of time – tomorrow, at night, at 6 p.m.;
- an adverb or adverbial phrase of place – at home, in a car, somewhere.
А теперь ты сформулируешь вместе со мной правила постановки слов-помощников, рядом с главным словом. Прочитай предложения, обращая внимание на слова, написанные курсивом, затем выбери правильный вариант из слов, выделенных жирным шрифтом, нажав на него. Ещё тебе надо помнить про названия следующих частей речи:
- a noun (существительное) – a hound, a horse;
- an adjective (прилагательное) – fierce, tired;
- an adverb of frequency (наречие частотности) – often, always, never, etc.;
- an adverb of how we do something (наречие образа действия) – quickly, slowly, smartly;
- an adverb or adverbial phrase of time (наречие или наречное выражение времени) – tomorrow, at night, at 6 p.m.;
- an adverb or adverbial phrase of place (наречие или наречное выражение места действия) – at home, in a car, somewhere.
